The Amazon is a state located south of Venezuela.
Its extension is 184.500 Km2, which represents 19,6% of Venezuela’s
territory. It was declared a state on 1992 and its capital Puerto
Ayacucho was founded on December 9th 1924, by the engineer Santiago
Aguerrevere. This fact makes it the latest state and capital of
this country. In the capital, you can find 53% of that state’s
population. There is an average of one person each 1.3 Km2, which
shows that more than 80% of that territory is virgin jungle without
any population. This state is considered a Natural Reserve Area
and Native Reserve. There are also some National Parks, Natural
Monuments and Biosphere Reserve Areas. Given these facts, the rules
that limit its use and development guarantee, now and for a long
time, that we can offer the originality and authenticity of its
natural wonders and the richness of its biological diversity.
The main attraction of this place is the presence
of wildlife in a natural state inside specific Ecosystems with particular
characteristics. This vast territory has beautiful landscapes of
the savannah and the jungle, several rivers with clear and dark
water, and particular rocky formations as a result from thousands
of years of erosion. The Orinoco is the most important River of
this country and the third most plentiful river in America. Its
source is located in this state, The Amazon, and its flow becomes
stronger during its first 960 kilometers (596, 52 miles), in which
countless little rivers become a part of it across the depths of
the jungle.
Various groups or native societies live in the most
diverse geographical areas. They are classified in five main families:
Yanomami, Guahibo, Piaroa, Ye´kwana or Maquiritare and Arawak.
There are more details about these groups at the Ethnological Museum
of the city. This interesting museum shows the cultural and historical
topics of the Venezuelan The Amazon, especially the topic related
to the Native Culture. In this museum, you can find samples from
the different ethnic groups as well as a geographical, historical
and geological vision of The Amazon.
At the Native Market of the city, you can find samples
from the native’s craftwork. The natives use just a few tools
and the materials they collect in the jungle to create true works
of art such as: pots, earthenware jars, vases, and budares, all
of them made of ceramic. You can find woodcarvings in the form of
reptiles, birds, and diverse mammals; you can also find different
kinds of knitted materials, which they use to make hammocks, bags
and other things. You will have the possibility of buying all these
exclusive things, as exclusive as your experience during your trip
to these lands.
There are only two seasons in this region. The rainy
season begins on May and ends in October, with temperatures around
28 and 36-centigrade degrees. The dry season goes from November
until April, with temperatures around 36 and 42 degrees Celsius.
During the summer, the humidity is low which makes the high temperatures
bearable.
